How to choose fresh ingredients
How to choose fresh watermelon
- You should buy ripe, sweet watermelons that usually have a small, dried stem.
- A good watermelon is one that has a yellow or cream-colored bottom.
- The sweeter the watermelon, the more concave and deeper the bottom will be.
- You need to choose watermelons with firm, round, and shiny skin, especially the black stripes on the watermelon should be clearly visible.
- You can gently press on the watermelon skin, which should feel firm, not soft, and when you tap the body of the watermelon, you should hear a “thump, thump” sound, indicating that it is a good watermelon.
How to choose fresh lemons
- Those lemons with smooth, shiny skin, firm and not rough or lumpy will have a higher vitamin content compared to others.
- You should choose lemons of moderate size but heavy in hand as they are fresh, quality, and contain a lot of juice.
- Avoid choosing lemons that are too small as they are immature, do not contain much juice, and have a bitter taste.
- Choose lemons that are bright green, thin-skinned, and vibrant, without any mold.
- Avoid buying lemons that are dark green or have yellow spots on the skin, as they are usually old lemons, the juice may be bitter, lacking acidity, and negatively affecting health.
How to choose mint leaves
- You should choose to buy mint plants with fresh leaves, not bruised, wilted, or yellowing.
- When smelling mint leaves, they should emit a characteristic fragrant smell, slightly spicy.
Differentiating between mint leaves and Vietnamese mint
- Mint leaves: Leaves grow opposite, egg-shaped, with serrated edges, and fine hairs on both sides. Strong fragrance, spicy and cool taste.
- Vietnamese mint: Leaves are elongated, with serrated edges, no fine hairs on the leaf surface, and are usually smaller than mint leaves. The fragrance is lighter than mint leaves, and the spicy taste is not strong.
