How to choose banana leaves for easy wrapping and not tearing:
- Choose flat, beautiful banana leaves that are not eaten by pests or yellowing, blackened from pest damage.
- Choosing leaves with dark green color means the leaves are mature, thicker, and will be more secure when wrapped; do not choose light green leaves as they are quite young, thin, lack thickness, and are very easy to tear.
- Do not choose leaves that are yellowing, and only keep whole, green leaves.
How to make Grilled Egg in the Shape of a Boat
-
Fold the shape of a boat
To create the shape of a boat with banana leaves, you prepare the tools including 1 medium-sized milk box (115ml) and about 100g of banana leaves.
Cut the banana leaves so that when folded, the width hugs the body of the milk box, and the length is double the milk box. Fold the two edges of the banana leaves and fix them with toothpicks.
Cut off the excess part of the toothpick head and use the milk box as a mold. Do this until you run out of banana leaves.
Tip: To prevent the leaves from tearing when folding, briefly blanch the banana leaves in boiling water to soften them, then let them dry or wilt before wrapping.

Prepare the ingredients
Shredded dried beef. Chopped green onions.
Crab sticks cut into bite-sized squares as shown.
Separate the salted egg, keep the yolk aside and discard the egg white (the egg white is very salty and lacks nutrients compared to the yolk). Rinse each yolk under a gentle stream of water to remove all the sliminess on the outside of the yolk.
Prepare a pot of boiling water, place the salted egg yolks in to steam for about 20 minutes over high heat. After steaming, let them cool completely and cut in half.
-
Making satay sauce
Place a pan on the stove, turn on low heat, add 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 tablespoon of fish sauce, 2 tablespoons of chili sauce, 1 tablespoon of ketchup, and 1 tablespoon of satay chili into the pan. Stir well until the sauce begins to simmer, then turn off the heat.
-
Grilling eggs
Add 7 chicken eggs to a bowl, season to taste: 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of seasoning powder, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of pepper. Beat the egg mixture until well combined.
You can grill the eggs using a regular charcoal grill or a clean grilling stove to avoid dust!
Place the banana leaf boat folded in step 1 on the grill, slowly pour the eggs inside the boat, making sure not to fill it too full as you’ll need to add the filling later.
When the eggs are slightly set, evenly add crab sticks, shredded dried beef, chopped green onions, fried onions, and salted egg on top of the eggs. Grill for an additional 5 – 10 minutes until the eggs are fully cooked, then turn off the heat.

Final Product
Grilled eggs in a unique, novel, delicious boat shape with the rich flavor of grilled eggs, along with fragrant, spicy beef jerky, chewy crab sticks, and aromatic salted eggs make it truly appealing, don’t you think!
