Information about the corn used for making popcorn
- There are many types of corn available on the market for making “butter popcorn”, but the most common is yellow corn (American corn) due to its high nutritional value; when making “popped corn”, it pops easily and has an attractive color.
- To make this dish, you must buy the dried corn; fresh corn with high moisture content will not pop.
- You can easily find specialized popcorn corn at supermarkets, food stores, and on e-commerce websites,… The price ranges from about 50,000 VND to 80,000 VND/kg (price updated on 11/04/2021).
How to make Caramel Popcorn

Popping Corn
Place a pot on the stove, add 30ml of cooking oil. When the oil is hot, pour 150gr of corn into the pot, stir a few times with chopsticks and cover the lid. When you hear popping sounds (the sound of corn popping), lift the pot and rotate it clockwise a few times, then place it back down.
Every 15 seconds, lift the pot and rotate it, repeat until you no longer hear the popping sound. Remove the pot from the heat, pour the corn onto a tray to cool (make sure to let it cool).
Tip:
- During the popping process, do not open the lid to check because the corn may pop out and can sometimes be dangerous for you.
- Rotating the pot helps the corn pop evenly, as at this point you cannot open the lid and stir the corn with chopsticks.

Making Caramel Sauce
Place another large pot on the stove, add 200gr of sugar and 30ml of water into the pot. Do not stir with chopsticks, just cook over low heat until the sugar starts to turn amber (caramel color).
Note: You should not stir too many times, as stirring before the sugar is dissolved can cause clumping and prevent it from coloring properly.

Mix popcorn with caramel
When the sugar turns a brown color, add 50ml of water and 60gr of unsalted butter, using chopsticks to dissolve the butter over medium heat, then add the popcorn and stir for about 2 minutes until the popcorn is evenly coated with the caramel sauce, then turn off the heat.
Finally, add about 8gr of vanilla sugar to the pot of popcorn. Cover and shake well to enhance the fragrance of the popcorn.
