How to Make Coconut Steamed Buns

  • Mix the dough

    Put 120ml of sweetened fresh milk into a bowl, then add 2gr of yeast and 2 tablespoons of sugar, and stir well.

    Sift 250gr of all-purpose flour through a sieve to ensure the dough is smooth and does not have lumps when kneading.

    Add the milk mixture with yeast into the flour and knead the dough for about 15 minutes until it is dry, elastic, and smooth.

  • Mix the coconut filling

    Add 250g of grated coconut to a bowl, then add 80g of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of salt, mix well, and let it sit for 15 minutes for the coconut to absorb the sugar.

    Tip:
    • You can adjust the amount of sugar according to your taste
    • If you want the coconut filling to be smoother, you can mix 1 tablespoon of tapioca flour with half a cup of water and then combine it with the sugar.

  • Shape the buns

    After the dough has risen, cut it into small pieces and use a pestle, rolling pin, or glass to roll the dough thin.

    Then spread the dough out, place a sufficient amount of filling in the middle, then gather all the edges of the dough up and pinch them together in the center so that the filling does not fall out.

    Continue this process until all the ingredients are used up.

    Tip: Remember to be gentle; otherwise, the dough will tear.

    Put the buns into the steamer and steam for 15 minutes until cooked.

    Tip:

    • To prevent the buns from sticking to the steamer, you should place them on banana leaves or parchment paper.
    • When steaming, you should apply a little cooking oil to the bottom of the buns.

  • When kneading the dough, if the buns have a sour smell (or an unpleasant smell), it is because you have let it rise too long or used too much yeast. If the dough is too wet, it is due to adding too much water. To fix these two issues, you just need to add a little more flour and knead the dough again thoroughly.
  • Do not steam the buns for too long, as this will cause them to turn yellow. You can add a little vinegar to the steaming water to prevent the buns from turning yellow.
  • When steaming the buns, cover with a cloth and then put the lid on to prevent steam from dripping onto the buns, avoiding sogginess.

How to Store Coconut Cream Buns

  • After letting the buns cool, wrap them in plastic wrap, then place them in a zip bag (you can vacuum seal them) and put them in the refrigerator’s cooling compartment.
  • When eating, you just need to microwave for 1 minute (depending on the microwave’s power) or put them in a steamer to heat them up.
  • You can also store the buns in the freezer, then thaw and heat them up to eat.
