How to prepare Braised Beef with Radish

  • Prepare the ingredients

    After purchasing the beef, rinse it briefly with water, then boil it with green onions and ginger for about 2 – 3 minutes. Once boiled, remove the beef, rinse it clean, and then use a knife to slice it into cubes.

    Simple and clean beef preparation tips
    • Method 1: You can use salt to clean and eliminate the smell of beef. Just take an adequate amount of salt, rub it onto the piece of beef, and let it sit for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, rinse the beef with cold water and it’s done.
    • Method 2: Roast a piece of ginger until cooked, then pound it into a paste. Next, rub the ginger paste onto the beef for about 5 minutes and rinse it off with water. This method not only helps eliminate the smell but also enhances the flavor of the beef.
    • Method 3: Simply use a clean, damp cloth to wipe the beef, then rinse it thoroughly with water. This method will not only clean the beef but also remove the smell without losing the quality of the meat.

    Peel the radish, wash it clean, and then cut it into bite-sized pieces.

    After cutting off the roots, wash the green onions clean and cut them into pieces about 5cm long.

  • Sauté and Braise the Beef

    First, place a non-stick pan on the gas stove, then add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil. When the oil is hot, add ginger, garlic, and peeled shallots to sauté until fragrant.

    Next, add the prepared beef into the pan, stirring evenly for about 2 – 3 minutes.

    After the beef has browned, season with 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1/4 of a cardamom pod, 1/2 star anise flower, 1/2 teaspoon of whole pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of dried chili into the pan. Stir well for about 2 minutes, then add 500ml of filtered water and cook until boiling.

    When the water in the pan has boiled, use a ladle to remove the foam, then transfer all the sautéed beef into the braising pot. Braise the beef over medium heat for about 15 minutes.

    After 15 minutes of simmering, transfer the beef to a pot, then add the prepared radish and cook on low heat for about 10 minutes.

    When you see that the stew is nearly dry and the radish looks transparent, add in the chopped green onions.

    Before turning off the heat, you can adjust the seasoning to your taste.
