How to choose fresh ingredients
How to choose fresh salmon
- You should choose salmon that has a bright pink or orange color; when you touch it, the flesh should have good elasticity.
- When buying fish, you should closely observe the surface of the salmon piece. If the fish piece is dry, not wet or leaking strange fluids, and the fat lines on the fish are evenly colored without dullness or brown spots, then you should buy it because that is fresh salmon fillet.
- Additionally, you should choose salmon fillets that have a distinctive aroma, without strange or rancid smells.
How to choose fresh sweet potatoes
- To choose fresh sweet potatoes, you should prioritize those that are of moderate size and feel heavy in your hand.
- You should buy sweet potatoes that have intact skin, not scratched or bruised, and feel firm when pressed gently.
- Avoid buying overly large sweet potatoes or those with a narrow waist or black spots on the body, as these are often wormy and fibrous rather than sweet and tender.

How to make Salmon Sweet Potato Porridge
-
Prepare the ingredients
First, wash the sticky rice and regular rice thoroughly and let it drain.
Fillet the salmon after purchasing, rinse it briefly with water, and soak it in 250ml of unsweetened milk for about 20 – 30 minutes.
Wash the green onion roots and ginger, chop them finely, and set them aside. The green parts of the green onion and dill should also be washed and chopped finely.
Finally, peel the sweet potatoes, wash them clean, and cut them into small cubes for easy eating.
-
Marinate the salmon
After washing the salmon with warm water, cut the fish into bite-sized pieces.
Next, marinate the fish with 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of seasoning powder, 1 teaspoon of ground pepper, and a little cooking oil, then mix well to allow the fish to absorb the spices.
-
Cook the porridge
Put all the rice into the rice cooker, add filtered water, and turn on the porridge cooking button (if the cooker does not have a porridge cooking mode, turn on the rice cooking button and remember to add more water).
-
Stir-fry salmon
Place a pan on the stove over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil to the pan, and wait for the oil to heat up before adding the chopped green onion and ginger to sauté until fragrant. Then, add the marinated salmon and stir-fry over medium heat until the fish is cooked.
-
Steam sweet potatoes
Pour 500ml of filtered water into a pot with a steamer, wait for the water to boil lightly, then arrange the sweet potatoes in the steamer and cover the pot. Steam the sweet potatoes for about 15 – 20 minutes until they are cooked.
-
Cook sweet potato salmon porridge
Add the steamed sweet potatoes to the porridge pot, turn the heat back on to bring the porridge to a boil, then add the stir-fried fish and gently stir with a ladle.
Season the porridge to suit your family’s taste and cook for another 5 minutes before enjoying.

Final Product
Salmon sweet potato porridge has a beautiful yellow color and an irresistible aroma. The porridge is very flavorful, with the creamy taste of salmon and sweet potato being incredibly appealing.
When eating, scoop the porridge into a bowl, add a little green onion and dill. If you like it spicy, you can add a bit of ground pepper or chili.
