What is Shortening? Where to Buy?

  • Shortening is a type of fat ingredient, existing in solid form and produced from vegetable oils (such as soybean, cottonseed oil,…) blended with lard. Many people refer to shortening as mutton fat or tallow.
  • Shortening will help make the crust of the cake softer and fluffier for types of pastries like tarts, pies, cookie cakes,….
  • Additionally, this ingredient also helps increase the sweetness and prolong the shelf life of the cakes.
  • You can buy shortening at specialty baking ingredient stores, at markets, or on e-commerce websites.
