How to choose fatty and rich chestnuts

  • Choose chestnuts that are shiny brown and have soft fuzz still fresh.
  • In addition, good chestnuts will have a characteristic aroma when peeled, with the flesh being off-white and not blackened at the ends. You can shake the chestnut; if you hear a sound inside, it indicates that the chestnut is still fresh and tasty.
  • You can easily buy chestnuts at large agricultural product stores, in markets, or online on e-commerce sites. The current price for chestnuts is 60,000 – 100,000 VND/1kg (price updated on March 15, 2021).

  • Prepare the chestnuts

    Wash the chestnuts thoroughly, drain, then use a knife to make a cross-shaped cut on the shell.

  • Boil the chestnuts

    Boil a pot of water, then add the chestnuts, cover tightly and boil for about 10 minutes.

    After 10 minutes, take the chestnuts out and let them drain.

  • Roast the chestnuts

    Place a pan on the stove, add 300g of coarse salt and roast over medium heat for about 5 minutes until hot and dry.

    Next, add the chestnuts and roast over low heat, stirring constantly until the chestnuts crack open, indicating they are done.
