How to Make Green Bean Cakes

  • Steam the green beans

    Add a little salt to 250g of green beans and soak for 2-3 hours. After that, drain and place in a steamer for 20 minutes until the green beans are cooked.

  • Blend the beans

    Next, put the green beans into a blender and blend until smooth, reserving 1/3 of this mixture to coat the outside of the green bean cake later.

  • Cook the beans

    Take 2/3 of the blended green beans and add them to a pan, then add 130g of sugar and cook over medium heat until the green beans are sticky and no longer stick to the pan.

    Next, add 30g of roasted sesame seeds and mix well.

    Add 200g of glutinous rice flour, 10g of rice flour, and 30ml of cooking oil into a bowl, then gradually add 200ml of warm water and mix the mixture thoroughly.

  • Kneading dough

    Use your hands to knead the mixture into a smooth, pliable mass, then wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest for 15 minutes.

  • Shaping the cake

    Take a portion of dough, roll it into a ball, then flatten it and place the green bean filling in the center, wrapping it tightly so that the filling doesn’t escape.

    Place the cake on a banana leaf or a piece of parchment paper to prevent sticking. Continue this process until all the ingredients are used up.

  • Steaming the cake

    Prepare a steamer. Boil water until it’s slightly steaming. Place the cake inside and steam for 20 minutes on low heat until the cake is cooked.

    Tip: When steaming the cake, make sure to release steam every 5 minutes to prevent the cake from becoming soggy or falling apart.

  • Coating with green beans

    Take the steamed cake and roll it in the remaining ground green beans and enjoy the finished product.

    Tip: Roll the cake in the green beans while it’s still hot; the green beans will stick to the cake better.

    The cake can be left out for up to 2 days if not used immediately. You can store the green bean cakes in the refrigerator for a few days, and when ready to eat, heat them in the microwave for about 30 seconds.
