How to Make Yam Pudding
-
Prepare the Yam
Wash the yam to remove the dirt on the surface; you can use a brush to scrub it clean. After scrubbing off the dirt, peel the skin off the yam.
Cut the yam in half; if the yam is too big, you should cut it into 4 pieces to make it easier to cook.
-
Boiled yam
Next, place the yam into a pot, add enough water to cover the yam. Put it on the stove and boil over medium heat for about 20 – 25 minutes until the yam is soft.
You can test it by using a fork to poke it; if it feels light, then the yam is cooked. After the yam is cooked, take it out and place it on a plate to cool.
Then, cut the yam into small pieces, and remember to set aside a small portion to use for decoration later.
-
Cooking dessert
Next, add 2 bowls of water and 200g of sugar into the pot, then place it on the stove and stir evenly over medium heat. Once the sugar has dissolved, add the chopped yam and cook over medium-low heat for 15 minutes to allow the sugar to soak into the yam.
During the cooking time, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 3 tablespoons of water. After about 15 minutes of cooking the dessert, when the yam has absorbed the sugar, gradually pour the cornstarch mixture in while stirring continuously to prevent lumps.
Cook for another 2 – 5 minutes until the dessert thickens slightly, then turn off the heat. Add a little honey to the pot and stir well to make the dessert fragrant and visually appealing.
At this point, scoop the dessert into individual bowls and decorate the top with thin slices of yam. And there you have it, you’re done!
Final Product
The warm, rich, chewy, and sweet sweet potato dessert is very delicious and easy to make. A bowl, though simple, may help you feel warm on rainy or cold windy days.

What is yam bean (khoai mài)?
