How to choose fresh and delicious lotus root

  • You should choose lotus roots that are thick, short, with just the right ripeness and good flavor. Choose intact lotus roots that are not bruised or rotten.
  • Fresh and delicious lotus roots will have a skin that is not darkened, and naturally ripe lotus roots will be yellow and have no strange smell.
  • Avoid buying lotus roots that are not intact or too white as they are likely to contain parasites, bacteria inside, or have been soaked in chemicals.

How to prepare Dried Lotus Root Tea

  • Prepare the lotus root

After buying the lotus root, wash it thoroughly with water, peel off the skin, then use a knife to slice the lotus root into thin or thick slices depending on your preference (slicing thinly will dry faster when sun-drying).

  • Sun-drying and roasting lotus root

Spread the sliced lotus root evenly on a tray, arrange them to avoid overcrowding which will slow down the drying process. Expose the lotus root to sunlight for about 8 – 10 hours until the lotus root is dry and crispy.

After drying, place the lotus root into a pan. Put the pan on the stove and roast the lotus root on low heat until the lotus root is golden and fragrant.

Transfer the roasted lotus root to a tray and let it cool; once completely cooled, store the dried lotus root tea in a food container for preservation and later use.
