What is all-purpose flour?

  • All-purpose flour is a type of ingredient commonly used to make a variety of baked goods, depending on the type of cake, the amount of flour needed may vary or it may be used in combination with other types of flour if necessary.
  • All-purpose flour is made from 2 types: soft winter wheat and hard spring wheat, with a protein content ranging from about 10 – 12%.
  • In addition, all-purpose flour can be either bleached or unbleached, but usually, bleached flour is used for making bread and pastries.
  • You can easily find all-purpose flour available in food stores, supermarkets, grocery stores, markets, baking supply shops, and reputable e-commerce sites in the market.

How to make Ghost-shaped Cookies

  • Whip the Butter

    Put 227g of unsalted butter softened at room temperature and 65g of powdered sugar into a bowl, then use a flat whisk to mix until the mixture is combined and smooth.

    Next, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 egg into the bowl and use a whisk to mix well.

  • Mixing the cookie dough

    Divide 225g of flour into several small portions, then add each portion into the bowl with butter and mix well until you get a smooth mixture.

    Next, divide the cookie dough mixture into 2 portions, place each portion in plastic wrap, flatten it evenly, and wrap it tightly.

    Finally, cool the dough in the refrigerator for 20 minutes before shaping.

  • Shaping and baking the cookies

    Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes.

    Next, take each portion of dough and roll it out to a thickness of about 6mm. Then, use a ghost-shaped cookie cutter to cut the dough. For the leftover dough, knead it again, roll it out, and continue using the cutter to cut.

    Place the cookies on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, then bake at 175 degrees Celsius for 12 – 15 minutes until the tops are golden brown.

  • Making the decorative icing

    Put 2 egg whites into a bowl and use a whisk to beat continuously until the eggs form tiny bubbles like soap.

    Then, divide 500g of powdered sugar into several portions, adding a little at a time into the egg mixture and continue whisking until it feels heavy, and the mixture is thick and smooth.

    Tip: It’s better to add the sugar gradually to adjust the thickness of the mixture.

  • Decorating the cake

    You take a little bit of the cake coating mixture and mix it with food coloring to create the eyes and nose.

    First, you take a 2mm piping bag to create the border for the cake. Next, take a larger piping bag to fill the cake with a layer of white coating, then let the cake dry completely.

    Next, draw the eyes and mouth on the cake with the black coating. Finally, use a brush to lightly stroke some black color on the surface to create beautiful lines, and you’re done.

  • Prepare and cook the pumpkin

    Peel the pumpkin, cut it into thin slices, and place it in a bowl. Then, cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and cook in the microwave for 3 minutes at 600W.

    After 3 minutes, take the pumpkin out and use a flat whisk to mash the pumpkin until smooth and let it cool.

    Then, spread the dough into a square shape using a layer of plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

    Place the dough between two layers of parchment paper, then use a rolling pin to flatten it, and continue to chill the dough in the refrigerator for another 30 minutes.

    Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes.

    Dust the ghost-shaped cookie cutter with a layer of dry flour, then press firmly on the dough to cut out the cookies. Arrange the cookies on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, then bake for 17 minutes at 160 degrees Celsius.

    You mix a little cocoa powder with a bit of water to create a thick mixture. Next, use a toothpick to dip into the cocoa bowl and draw eyes, nose, mouth, and hands for the cookies.
