How to choose good chestnuts:
- To buy fresh and tasty chestnuts, you should choose those with bright brown shells, and you can see the fine hairs on the outside of the shell are still fresh.
- Moreover, you should choose chestnuts with a distinctive aroma, the flesh should be off-white, and when peeled, it should not be black at the ends.
- You can hold the chestnut and shake it lightly; if you hear a sound, you should not buy it because that indicates the chestnut has been stored for a long time and is dry.
- Additionally, you should not buy chestnuts that feel soft when squeezed lightly, are not firm, and have no aroma when roasted.

How to prepare roasted chestnuts using an air fryer
-
Prepare the chestnuts
After purchasing the chestnuts, select and discard any damaged or shriveled ones, then wash them thoroughly with water. Next, place the chestnuts in a basket to drain. Then, place each chestnut on the cutting board and use a knife to make a cross cut on the shell.
Place the steamer on the stove, add water, and bring it to a boil, then steam the chestnuts over medium heat for about 10 – 15 minutes. Once the chestnuts are soft, turn off the heat, remove the chestnuts from the basket, and let them cool.
-
Roasting chestnuts
First, preheat the air fryer to 180 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes. Then, place the steamed chestnuts in the basket, spreading them evenly so that they roast evenly.
Roast the chestnuts at 120 – 140 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes, until the chestnuts puff up and turn golden brown, releasing a fragrant aroma.
Tip: You should line the basket with parchment paper (baking paper) before roasting to prevent food from sticking to the basket, preserving the non-stick layer. -
Finished product
Roasted chestnuts have a sweet, rich flavor, making them perfect for a snack to enjoy during the cool winter season.
Chestnuts roasted with an air fryer are fragrant, with uniformly golden brown insides, just as good as those roasted in a traditional pan. Since they are cut and steamed, their shells puff up easily, making them easy to peel after roasting.
You can prep the chestnuts in advance and store them in the refrigerator; when you want to eat, just put them in the air fryer for about 10 minutes to have beautifully roasted, fragrant chestnuts ready to enjoy.
How to preserve chestnuts for a long time
- You put the roasted chestnuts in a jar with a lid or a tightly tied plastic bag and store them at room temperature. Absolutely do not place them in the refrigerator’s cooling compartment as this will make the chestnuts more likely to become soft and moldy.
- If you notice the chestnuts showing signs of becoming soft, you can put them in a non-stick pan and roast them again over medium heat. If the chestnuts seem dry, turn off the heat, let them cool, and store them in a box, jar, or plastic bag as mentioned above.
Which air fryer should you choose?
When roasting chestnuts with an air fryer, you should choose a product with high power. This will help the chestnuts cook faster.
Currently, there are many high-end air fryer brands on the market such as Lock&Lock air fryer, Tefal, BlueStone,…
