1. What is wax coconut?

Wax coconut is a common name, also known as creamy coconut or thick-fleshed coconut. The name clearly reflects the characteristics of this type of coconut with its thick, dense, chewy flesh and a richer, softer flavor compared to regular coconuts.

Wax coconut appeared in the 1960s, this type of coconut is a specialty unique to Tra Vinh, Mekong Delta of Vietnam, where it is famous for many delicious and attractive types of coconut. Due to genetic mutations or climatic and soil conditions of this land, a strange wax coconut variety has been created, unique to this province.

In wax coconut trees, only those coconuts that are not waxy can produce embryos, buds, and shoots and are selected as wax coconut seedlings, while those with wax cannot be used for breeding.

2. Why is wax coconut expensive?

Wax coconut is a specialty that can only be found in Tra Vinh, which is why it cannot be propagated in many other areas; this uniqueness is one of the reasons that the price of wax coconut is quite high.

In addition, the sweet, rich flavor with a thick, sweet coconut water and high nutritional value makes anyone who tries it fall in love. The special thing about this type of coconut is its rarity, “not everyone can buy it with money,” as each bunch of coconuts typically has only about 2 – 3 wax coconuts, a quantity insufficient to supply the market.

Coconut ice cream

The method of making coconut ice cream is similar to other homemade ice cream methods, just need a little cream, sweetened condensed milk, coconut flesh, and unsweetened yogurt, mix well and blend until very smooth.

Pour the mixture into a mold and freeze for about 6 hours to enjoy the delicious coconut ice cream, with a light sweet taste served with roasted peanuts, green rice flakes, or dried coconut, nothing could be better.

Coconut ice cream

Coconut eaten directly

Don’t think that coconut can only be transformed into smoothies or ice cream to enjoy the delicious taste of this fruit. In fact, when you eat it directly, you can clearly feel the sweet and fatty flavor, with the sticky coconut flesh; this is what makes it special and creates a distinctive taste that anyone who has tasted it will always remember.

Frozen sap coconut

Besides the way to eat that TasteVN has shared above, you can freeze the whole sap coconut for about 4 hours. When the coconut meat reaches about 80% frozen, you can scoop it out with a spoon and enjoy it, possibly adding a little sugar and milk for a more rounded flavor.

4. How much is a sap coconut?

Due to its rarity and unique flavor, the price of sap coconuts is quite high, ranging from 150,000 VNĐ – 250,000 VNĐ/fruit. In fact, in some places, sap coconuts can be sold for 400,000 VNĐ/fruit and still attract many buyers.

You can find sap coconuts at specialty shops in the Mekong Delta, where you can easily buy them at a reasonable price and ensure quality. Additionally, some supermarkets and e-commerce sites also sell this type of sap coconut.

5. How long can sap coconuts last?

Freshly harvested coconuts can be stored for 15 – 20 days at normal temperature. If you want to keep sap coconuts longer, you can put them in the freezer for about over 1 month or in the refrigerator for about 25 – 30 days.

However, storing them too long will cause sap coconuts to lose their fresh flavor; the coconut meat will no longer be chewy and will lose its sweetness. You should still use sap coconuts within about 10 days to fully enjoy the fresh taste of this fruit.

If you have separated the coconut meat, you can store this part for about 3 days in the refrigerator refrigerator or 1 week in the freezer.
