How to choose fresh and delicious watermelon
- Choose watermelons that have a proportionate head and tail, round and even. Conversely, avoid watermelons with a large head and a small tail or those with a gourd shape (narrow in the middle) as these are often not ripe and not tasty.
- Select watermelons with a wilted stem as this indicates that the watermelon is fully ripe; on the other hand, watermelons with fresh green stems may be picked before they are ripe and will not be sweet.
- Tap the watermelon with your hand; if you hear a deep, heavy “thud,” it indicates that the watermelon is ripe. If the sound is too light, the watermelon is still immature.
