How to choose fresh and delicious tilapia

  • You should choose round tilapia, usually male tilapia, about the size of 3 to 4 fingers, intact, with few scales peeling off. These fish will yield more meat, and the flesh will be firmer and fattier.
  • You should choose fish with bright, clear eyes, clearly visible pupils inside.
  • Fresh fish have bright red gills, firm flesh, and when gently pressed, the body does not break or leak fluid.
  • You should select fish that have shiny colors. The scales should still be tightly attached to the fish’s body.
  • Avoid choosing fish with cloudy eyes or gills that have turned dark red or black as they are likely spoiled.

How to Prepare Braised Snakehead Fish with Turmeric

  • Prepare the Snakehead Fish

    To clean and remove the fishy smell from the snakehead fish, scrape off the scales, cut off the gills, fins, and tail, then use a knife to cut open the belly to remove the intestines and the blood veins along the spine.

    Soak the fish in diluted salt water for about 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water, and finally use a knife to cut the fish in half.

    Effective ways to remove the fishy smell from snakehead fish

    • Using salt: Add a little salt to diluted water, soak the fish for about 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water.
    • Using rice water: Soaking the fish in rice water also effectively helps to remove the fishy smell.
    • Using alcohol: Soak the fish in water containing a little alcohol or lemon juice for about 15 – 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

    When buying turmeric, use a brush to scrub off the dirt, then rinse several times with water, and finally crush it.

  • Marinate the fish

    Place the fish in a clay pot, then marinate with 3 tablespoons of fish sauce, 1.5 teaspoons of monosodium glutamate, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and the mashed turmeric, then mix well and let the fish absorb the seasoning for about 20 – 30 minutes.

  • Stew the fish

    Place the snakehead fish pot on the stove, turn on medium heat, and cook until the stew begins to boil.

    When the stew starts to boil, reduce the heat to low and proceed to stew the fish for about 15 – 20 minutes until the sauce thickens and the seasoning is well absorbed by the fish.

    Tip:

    • During the stewing process, every 10 minutes, gently turn the fish once to allow it to absorb the seasoning evenly and to prevent the fish at the bottom of the pot from burning.
    • Avoid turning the fish too many times as it may cause the fish meat to break apart.

    Finally, add pepper and finely chopped scallions, stew for another minute, then turn off the heat.

How to remove turmeric stains from fingers

  • You can use coconut oil to eliminate turmeric stains on your hands. Just take a little coconut oil and rub it evenly on the stained skin, then wash it off with soap to remove it.
  • You can also use cotton wool soaked in a little fresh milk and rub it on the yellowed skin area until it disappears.
  • If you have hydrogen peroxide at home, you can also use cotton wool soaked in hydrogen peroxide and apply it to the area with turmeric stains until it is clean, then wash it off with soap.
