What is unsalted butter? Where to buy unsalted butter
Unsalted butter is made from cream with a fatty taste, and when used, you can feel a bit of sweetness at the end of your tongue. Since no salt is added, unsalted butter won’t last long, but it is easier to use.
You can find unsalted butter at stores selling baking ingredients or large supermarkets nationwide! If you have time, you can also make unsalted butter at home following the recipe below.
Where to buy European spices
You can buy rosemary, parsley, and thyme fresh or dried at spice shops, imported goods stores, or e-commerce websites.

How to Make Tater Tots
-
Bake the Potatoes
After washing and drying the potatoes, wrap them in aluminum foil and place them in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius for about 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the size of the potato.
Tip
- To absorb all the steam released while baking, you should sprinkle a little salt on the potato when baking.
- You can check the doneness by poking the potato with chopsticks. The potato is done if it can be easily pierced and is soft.
When the potatoes are cooked, take them out to cool.
-
Grate the Potatoes
When the potatoes have cooled, use a knife to remove the skin.
Use a multifunctional grater to grate the cooked potatoes into large pieces. Then place the grated potatoes into a bowl.
-
Prepare the potato mixture
Place a pan on the stove, add 100g of unsalted butter and melt it over the lowest heat.
While the butter is melting, finely chop the cilantro, rosemary, and thyme. Add the chopped herbs to the pan and stir well.
When the butter and herbs are well combined, pour the mixture into the bowl of potatoes.
Add 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of pepper, and 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and mix well.
-
Shape the Tater Tots
Stuff the potato mixture into a small cylindrical mold with a diameter of 1cm and pack it tightly. If you don’t have a mold, you can also shape the Tater Tots by hand into pieces about the size of a finger joint.
To prevent the Tater Tots from breaking when frying, sprinkle 2 tablespoons of flour on top and evenly coat the surface of the Tater Tots.
Tip: Once completed, you can store the Tater Tots in the freezer for later use.
-
Frying Tater Tots
Place a pot on the stove, add oil to about half the pot. When the oil is hot, add the Tater Tots and fry for about 5 minutes.
When the Tater Tots are golden and crispy, take them out and place them on a plate to drain the oil. Sprinkle a little salt on top for added flavor.
-
Finished Product
Tater Tots when completed will have a beautiful golden brown color that is very appealing. The outer layer will be crispy with a moderate salty taste, and when bitten into, the inside will be soft potato filled with the aroma of butter and herbs that adds a highlight to each Tater Tot.
You can dip the dish with a bit of ketchup or hot sauce to add a bit of sour, sweet, and spicy flavor that enhances the taste and makes it more delicious!
What are Tater Tots?
Tater Tots, created in 1953, is a dish invented by the frozen food company Ore-Ida in the United States. At that time, the trend of using canned and frozen foods among American consumers had passed, and Ore-Ida needed to find a solution for their stock of canned potatoes.
The two founders of the company at that time came up with the idea of chopping up these potatoes, adding some flour and spices, compressing them into bite-sized pieces, and frying them. And from there, the classic Tater Tots came to American consumers as a novel snack.
As for the name of the dish, Ore-Ida coined the name ‘Tater Tots’ with a catchy pronunciation to help the product reach the market more easily. ‘Tater’ is a shorthand for ‘potato’ in the local vernacular.
